Spine Poems by Grades 6 & 8!

I couldn't let National Poetry Month end without posting some pics of spine poems created by my 6th and 8th graders!  If you have never heard of spine poems, it is a way of writing poetry using just the titles of books.  This is a project I first tried 2 years ago, thanks to the Mighty Little Librarian.  It is always fascinating to see who gets really involved in this project.  Sometimes, the students who seem the least interested in library class, get inspired by this fun activity.  I saw some epically long poems written by 8th grade this year!  Some 6th graders really took pride of ownership by signing their poems.  Perhaps the most original spine poem I saw this year imagines two middle school girls texting each other! Please see some of the gems below:

Happy National Poetry Month!

Earth Day Diamante Poem

Earth Day is April 22, 2017!  Use the following link to create a diamante poem about Earth Day:

http://www.readwritethink.org/files/resources/interactives/diamante/

Use your real first name so I know your poem is yours!  If you need some ideas for nouns, verbs, and adjectives, look at the "Earth Day Diamante" word bank (Mrs. Miller will have copies in class.)

When you've finished your poem, share it with Mrs. Miller.  Use my e-mail address for both the TO and FROM fields (cmiller@staug-md.org).

Happy Earth Day!

Researching a famous baseball player!

To celebrate the start of baseball season, Grades 3-5 will be conducting research on that famous Yankee with an important Baltimore connection - Babe Ruth!

The source we will use for our research is:

Grade 3 will work with a partner to answer specific questions in a fun format.

Grade 4 may work with a partner. However, each partner must complete his or her own worksheet.

Grade 5 will work independently to complete his or her research.

Happy researching!
